There exists a sick thrill in firing up the vacuum cleaner amidst screaming children, frantic cats, and growling, snapping dogs, all scrambling for high ground.

Mwhahaha. . .I get the same thrill.
Beau stands on the furniture and screams and Carmella runs about grabbing their toys for fear of me sucking them all up. Man, you turn on that vacuum and they hustle! It is the only fun part of housework for me.
Ha! I shampooed the carpet one day when Carter would just. not. nap. Or stop screaming in sheer exhaustion. The noise soothed him--and me. Sleeping baby AND clean carpets. Win-win.
