I know.

I have been MIA lately. Not sure why - just haven't felt too exciting. Haven't felt motivated to write. Whatever.

But I did write a post on Metroblogging Atlanta that caused a bit of a hullabaloo, in case you want to check it out and weigh in. It even spawned a similar post by another Metblogs writer.

I'd like to know what your thoughts are on the issue. Plus, I want to take out those peeps in Karachi who always have 50+ comments on their posts.

My dad is from North, SC. It is the sandy-soil zone or "low-country" (if you are getting fancy). So, maybe it is a regional saying. Does your dad say "Great Day!" instead of "Holy Cow" (or "Holy Shit")?

I ready your metroblog post and some comments. Crime is definitely increasing in Roswell, but it has so far been smash/grab and not burglary or muggings. I don't blame you for feeling insecure to go from MARTA to your car at night. Inside the MARTA train or station is not so scary, but getting to your car from the station sure is. There are many issues at play in your post and I don't know that the solution to any one is the same as for the others.

Wait, you mean the town is called "North?" Strange. My Pop says "Great Day!" Other ones I remember are "Sakes Alive" or "Great sakes alive." That's a long I, for anyone reading and wondering how that would be said. My mom says something "[verbs] the pee-waddin' outta me." Like, "You scared the pee-waddin' outta me." My grandfather still says "ought" instead of zero.

I am going to have to think of some others.

"Great Day," which is pronounced "Greh-uh-ate Day!" with the full three syllables is apparently short for "Great Day of Life." I'm guessing it means "I've never seen something so amazing in my life" but we don't really know.

Yes, North is name of the town. And they were not "in-town" but were actually in Springfield community. It was a farming community at the time but now mostly timber.

Yep, Great Day. Also, "Land Sakes." Whatever that means.

I have a friend who's pretty Southern- she says, "oh, my LAND" a lot.

Annie - just wanted to let you know that I really enjoy both your blog and the metblog posts. You write with clarity and humor, and I really appreciate your perspective and honesty. Even when you don't feel too exciting or motivated. :)

Annie, definitely appreciate your honesty and willingness to open up your mind. I'm a fan.

I know a couple of people who say "Great Scott!" Didn't that weird Christopher guy from "Back to the Future" use to say that?
